- Portfolio Assessment Demonstrate what you’ve learned through work or life experience by submitting a portfolio. If your knowledge aligns with the learning outcomes of a specific course, you may earn credit— even without formal classroom instruction. (Note: Professional work samples are required.)
- Credit by Exam Earn credit by passing standardized exams such as CLEP, AP, IB, TECEP, or departmental challenge exams. Transfer credits may also apply.
- Military Experience Receive credit for military training and service. Submit your official military transcripts (e.g., JST, CCAF) and a copy of your DD214 to the Registrar or the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs.
- Course Challenge Exams Some departments offer exams that allow you to “test out” of a course by demonstrating mastery of the material.
- Credit by Credential If you have completed professional training or earned certifications (like CompTIA, SHRM, PMP, CCMA, etc.), you may be eligible for credit. Just provide documentation of your training and learning outcomes of the course.
- Professional Experience Turn your real-world experience into college credit. Our CPL program values your professional achievements and helps accelerate your degree progress. Supporting documentation and work samples are required.

- Minimum of 30 credits completed at WP; may vary based on courses completed for RN
- Must complete total of 120 credits and meet university core and language requirement
- Core is considered complete for most AA and some AAS degrees
- RN license; Associate Degree or Diploma from an accredited program
- Go to WP Online RN-BSN courses.
- Click on core courses and electives for the courses and their descriptions. There are four graduate level courses in this program (NUR 5461, NUR 5701, NUR 6001 and one elective (NUR 5081 or NUR 6011).
- Students may attend part time (1 class per 7-week session) – 20 Months
- Students may attend full time (2 classes per 7-week session) – 10 months
- If a student changes their degree plan, the time to completion will vary
- Associate degree or diploma in nursing from an accredited institution
- GPA of 2.5 or higher
- RN license, valid and unencumbered
- Refer to your preceptor handbook for program-specific information as to when clinicals begin.
- The earlier students can secure a preceptor, the better. Students should submit preceptor information no later than 90 days prior to the start of each clinical rotation to be sure they are approved and avoid any delays in progressing with a clinical course.
- FNP:
- 170 (120 pediatric and 50 obstetrics] hours with pediatric clients (children, adolescents, and families)
- 510 hours with adults, including seniors
- Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP:
- 510 hours with adults, including seniors
- Clinical hours cannot be completed in the student’s direct unit or patient care area
- Immediate supervisor cannot be the student’s preceptor
- Students cannot perform clinical hours during any time they are being paid as an employee (they cannot be “on the clock”)
- Must be in a primary care setting:
- Medical offices, long-term care facilities, hospice settings, assisted-living, hospital out-patient clinics, urgent-care
- Schools (i.e. nursing programs)
- Education department in a healthcare facility
- Hospital setting, administration department (with Nurse Executives or Nursing Administration)
- Refer to your preceptor handbook for program-specific information as to when clinicals begin.

- MSN – Adult-Gero NP and Post-Master's Adult-Gero NP Certificate: 510 hours
- MSN – FNP and Post-Master's FNP Certificate: 680 hours
- MSN – Nursing Administration and Post-Master's Nursing Administration Certificate: 170 hours
- MSN – Nursing Education and Post-Master's Nursing Education Certificate: 170 hours/PM CERT 45 hours
- Students are responsible for ensuring their preceptor signs the Preceptor Agreement Form
- Students submit this documentation to their Clinical Coordinator
- If an affiliation agreement is needed, students will need to provide the university with a point of contact to initiate this process
- Affiliation agreement negotiations are between the university and the clinical site
- Students are only responsible for ensuring the university has a contact person to initiate this process
- Students should submit preceptor information to their Clinical Coordinator
- Once the clinical process is complete and the student has been verified as “clinically ready,” they will receive a notification from the Clinical Coordinator
- The number of preceptors varies based on clinical courses and clinical rotations
- Clinical hours may be split among multiple approved preceptors
- No, William Paterson does not contract with a third party to assist with locating preceptors or clinical sites
- Students are discouraged from using a third party especially if payment for services is required
- No, students are not permitted to use their direct supervisor as their preceptor
- Students are also not permitted to perform clinical rotations during hours they are working as an employee at a facility
- Active certification as a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, or Physician
- Must have a minimum of one year in role as a professional licensed practitioner
- Current unencumbered license to practice in the state where clinicals take place
